I can’t say it’s a fact, being a mere human,
but I will say that I deeply suspect
that trees know when you admire them,
when your eyes stroke their limbs or
follow the dance of their leaves.
I think they sense what you are feeling
when you touch their bark or lean
against their trunks, and more than that,
I think they have a desire to comfort
and sooth you. I also suspect they are surprised
and happy when you recognize that they
are as real and alive as you and that
it makes their day.
