The sky was overcast, the day cold, but
I walked into the gray-shrouded woods
anyway. I was hungry for color, for hues
beyond the winter’s neutral palette.
I walked a snowy trail for a quarter mile
before my eyes opened to see that color
was all around me, in the bark
of every tree. Funny how sometimes
we’re blind to the very thing we crave,
only to find, at last, that it was hidden
in plain sight.
