The Message of the Thistle

The thistle comes with its barbs, and the rose with its thorns.
Some beauty requires guarding, lest it be carelessly approached or taken for granted.
I visited the zoo in San Francisco once and looked for the giraffes.
“Oh,” said their keeper, when I inquired. “We had to put them in for the evening due to the fog. They’re quite delicate, you know.”
This is not a gentle world.
Hostility is built into the game to test our gallantry and valor. When it comes to the vulnerable and fragile, how shall we respond? What part are we to play?
Look to the thistle; look to the rose. Then rise to the occasion.
