Subtle Joys

Tiny flowers, gone to seedThey’re hidden from the jaded eyes, from those who require new and gleam and bold.  But for those who have learned to savor the simple, the delicate, the restrained, what sweetness the subtle pleasures hold.

A pale clear sunrise, a baby’s sigh, a small white feather floating on the breeze, a sleeping lover’s smile.  How tender!

You can’t be in a rush if you want to see them, or clamoring with do lists and goals (not that these things do not have their places.)  You can’t be leaning into what happens next or buried in the dust of the hours gone by.

No, these muted treasures require you to be looking with eyes that have never seen this moment before, to be listening as if all music was new. Here, an unobtrusive color; there, a discreet and simple sound.

Then, walking beneath deep clouds amidst faded brambles, you may find wee jewels and hear a hawk’s call fall from the sky.
