Love Song for October
I have to admit it. I love October:
The first frost,
the great V’s of migrating geese,
the crimson and gold of the trees,
the leaves pouring down,
their crunch beneath my feet,
the first glimpse of bare branches,
the first taste of snow,
the freshly pressed cider,
the scents of cinnamon and nutmeg
wafting from the kitchen,
the reemergence of comfort foods on the supper table,
and school buses on the roads,
the heaps of notebooks and crayons on the store shelves,
the cheers from the high school’s football games
rolling across the fields,
the thumping of the drums from the marching bands,
pulling sweaters and warm socks from storage,
tucking a snuggly blanket onto the bed,
and everywhere mums and pumpkins and gourds.
Gone, September’s melancholy. Gone, the summer dreams.
Now it’s autumn in high gear, the festival of fall,
Golden and golden and golden.
