The Lure of Distant Horizons
The distant horizon pulls the spirit as much as it pulls the eye. Something in us is drawn by what lies beyond the next hill, around the next bend in the road.
But the horizon is broad. You need to decide which feature of it is calling your name and let that be your guide as you travel.
Know your direction. Know where you’re headed. Then stay the course and savor the scenery as you go.
The journey will grow you. It will call forth your skills and strengths and ingenuity. It will put you face to face with your fears and test your resolve. But along the way you will also meet companions who will walk with you awhile and guides who appear out of nowhere to show you the way. All that you encounter will add onto your riches the wisdom that comes from experience alone.
But it’s your focus on the horizon that shapes your destiny. It determines who you will have become once you finally arrive. So choose the direction that most clearly sings to you. Know where you’re headed. Then stay the course and savor the scenery as you go.
This is the way of happiness.
